In 1983, Greg Gahagan, Ken Nerlove and John Kryzanowski purchased the Old Polson Ranch in Jamieson Canyon, located in South Napa. This 28-acre ranch was what was left of a larger ranch that had in the past been used for cattle and sheep production. In 1983, there were no grapes grown in Jamieson Canyon. In 1984, they planted 2 acres of grapes on the front south-facing gentle rolling slope located at the front of the ranch. This piece of land had been used in the past for grazing, and more recently had been used for a landing strip for one of the former owners! Now it was a test vineyard. Their initial plan was to determine if they could grow grapes of a good quality in Jamieson canyon. The initial planting was 1 acre of Chardonnay and 1 acre of Pinot Noir. The decision to plant these two varieties was determined mainly by the weather that was common to this area. There was no concern of frost damage because of the elevation and the closeness of San Pablo Bay. The early morning fog and cooler temperatures made this location especially suited for the growing of the cool region's grapes. This content requires the Macromedia Flash Player. Get Flash
